Agreed Medical Examiner (AME)

An Agreed Medical Examiner, or AME, is a physician who provides an evaluation only where an injured worker is represented by an attorney.  The injured worker's attorney and the defendant insurance carrier mutually agree upon an AME so that they can obtain a neutral evaluation and settle their case.

Once an injured worker is evaluated by an AME, he or she is no longer entitled to evaluation by a QME (see explanation under Common Terms, left).  Further, an AME may be brought in regardless of the year the injury occurred.

An AME physician may also be a QME, but this is not a requirement.
